U.S ARMY WANTS TO GIVE WAR ROBOTS MORE POWER TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS

Armies of robots including dog-like creatures walking on four legs and huge lumbering trucks are the stuff of science fiction - specifically, bleak films such as The Terminator series.

But the U.S. military not only wants more robots - it wants more 'autonomous' robots, robots free to make their own decisions on the battlefield.

A new robot is described as 'like a dog' that follows troops on the battlefield - and future models will use technologies such as laser imaging to build their own picture of the world.

Of more than 6,000 robots deployed, about 750 have been destroyed in action

This has saved at least that many human lives, the Pentagon's Robotics Systems Joint Program Office estimates.

Only now is robotics research nearing the stage that the military may soon be able to deploy large ground vehicles capable of performing tasks on their own with little human involvement.

Robotics scientists

The results, among other things, could be more saved lives, less wear and tear on the troops, and reduced fuel consumption.

THE USE OF SUGAR TO ENHANCE WOUND HEALING

A variety of case reports provide amazing data supporting the use of sugar in treating infected wounds. Dr. Leon Herszage treated 120 cases of infected wounds and other superficial lesions with ordinary granulated sugar purchased in a supermarket. The sugar was not mixed with any anti-septic, and no antibiotics were used concurrently. Of these 120 cases, there was a 99.2 percent cure rate, with a time of cure varying between 9 days to 17 weeks. Odor and secretions from the wound usually diminished within 24 hours and disappeared in 72 to 96 hours from onset of treatment.

Like Dr. Herszage, Dr. Richard A. Knutson has had very successful results from the use of sugar in wounds. One of Dr. Knutson's most unique cases is recounted as follows.

A 93-year-old man was treated at Delta Medical Center for a fracture of his right hip. Concurrently, he received treatment for an old injury to his left leg, sustained 43 years earlier in 1936, when a tree had fallen on the leg while he was chopping wood. He had sustained an open fracture of the tibia and soft tissue loss to the leg anteriorly. Although the fracture had healed, bone remained exposed, surrounded by a chronic draining ulcer 20 cm x 8 cm overall. The patient was able to recall the various treatments used in attempts to heal the ulcer-iodoform, scarlet red, zinc oxide, nitrofurazone, sulfa, and a long list of antibiotics-all to no avail. He said that he had outlived six of the surgeons who had advised amputation. He was started on sugar/pI dressings, and then changed to treatment with sugar/PI compound as an inpatient. After hip surgery, the ulcer healed completely in 13 weeks. The ulcer defect filled completely, and skin grafting was not necessary.

Healing through the use of sugar is an old-time tradition that has been used by both Native Americans and different tribes in Africa. In 2009, a series of tests were conducted in British hospitals to determine whether there's any truth behind the idea that sugar can be used to treat wounds and ease pain. After a series of tests, the Daily Mail newspaper in England reported that the treatment had been a success.

Step 1

Clean the wound well using soap and warm water. Pat dry until you're sure there is no moisture left. If there debris or foreign objects are observed within the wound, extract everything and clean again.

Step 2

Pour sugar directly on the wound, making sure it gets into the wound and doesn't stick only to the surface. If the wound is large, cover it with honey first and then sprinkle sugar on top. The honey will help the sugar stay in place and provide its full healing benefits.

Step 3

Cover with a bandage immediately and secure the bandage with tape. The bandage will prevent bacteria and debris from getting into the wound.

Step 4

Change the bandage and repeat the cleaning and sugar application once a day. Rip off the bandage rather than pulling it softly. The hard motion will remove dead tissue and clear the wound.

Step 5

Be consistent. Sugar healing is a slow process, and it can take several months for serious wounds to heal. However, you should start seeing positive

IN JAPAN, IT'S ILLEGAL TO BE FAT

Don't get fat in Japan! According to new laws passed about four years ago, it's illegal to be above a certain waist measurement. If a male surpasses 33.5 inches in the waist, he's considered "fat." For women, it's 35.4 inches.

If you reach or go over the threshold, you will have to attend counseling with a physician or, for the more obese individuals, might be responsible for your company getting fined. To encourage a healthy weight, you also may be given gifts of pedometers and gym memberships, so that's cool.

The goal of this program is to prevent obesity, as well as to lower healthcare costs. It may seem almost draconian in its execution, but it's a good idea, and one the United States could certainly benefit from.

Anyway, next trivia

INVISIBLE SOLDIERS NOW A REALITY

Created by Canadian camouflage design company Hyperstealth, Quantum Stealth is a material that renders its wearer completely invisible by bending light waves around it, which is in effect very similar to the invisibility cloak worn child wizard extraordinaire, Harry Potter.

Sadly, that's not going to be possible for most of us, but if you're a US soldier, this fantasy could become a reality sooner than you think. Apparently, the US Military is currently backing development of special materials to make American soldiers completely invisible on the battlefield, and according to one camouflage design company, it might soon get its wish. Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp. CEO, Guy Cramer, says their new "Quantum Stealth" material has finally made the sci-fi/fantasy technology a reality. Unfortunately at this time, we can only take his word for it, as its development is so secret that the company cannot even show footage of how it works, on its website, offering only mock-ups of its effects.

TWO BROTHERS POSE FOR A PHOTO BEFORE GETTING STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

Two brothers pose for a photo in Sequoia National Park moments before getting struck by lightning in August, 1975.

Two seconds after Mary McQuilken snapped this shot of her brothers posing on top of Moro Rock in Sequoia National Park, California a powerful lightning bolt struck them.

A hiker just outside the frame was killed and Sean (on the left) eventually also died from complications associated with his injuries. Michael McQuilken (on the right) survived. The family was hiking in the Sierra Nevada during August 1975 when the incident occurred.

A WOMAN WHO WAS MISTAKEN FOR SOMEONE ELSE's IDENTITY, DISCOVERS SHE REALLY DID HAVE A DOPPELGANGER- HER OTHER TWIN WHICH SHE NEVER THOUGHT SHE HAD

For three years Bao Lulin found herself continually mistaken for someone else.

Lulin, a waitress from Jiuyang in Guizho, southern China, was puzzled by the number of people who approached and spoke to her as if they knew her.

They would ask her about her work in Fujian Province, mistake her for the daughter-in-law of a complete stranger or ask why she did not recognise them. However, Lulin had never before seen any of them in her life.

'You have come back from Fujian Province? Why didn't you inform us?,' one commented.

When a confused Lulin asked who they were, another scoffed: 'You must earn big money, and don't want to know us.'

Just a few months later a middle-aged man approached Lulin, who worked as a cashier in a restaurant in Jiuyang and told her: 'You look absolutely identical to one of my relatives.'

Not long after a confused teenager dining at the restaurant approached Lulin and said, 'Yanfei, you work here now?'
Lulin decided to search for this mysterious Yanfei but soon after fell pregnant and had to put the plan on hold.

The married mother-of-one said: 'The idea to look for her was always in my mind. I wanted to look for her after my son got a bit bigger.'

In the end it was three years before Lulin was able to start her search for her ringer.

In October Lulin was once again mistaken for Yanfei at work but she saw her opportunity and managed to get the woman's address from the diner.

Last month Yang Yanfei, also of Jiuyang, was playing with her son at home when she suddenly heard her mother-in-law shout, 'Yanfei, come here now!'
Yanfei was alarmed by her mother-in-law's urgent tone and when she ran out a woman was standing with her back to her and suddenly turned around.
Yanfei was shocked - Lulin was almost identical to her.

The married mother-of-one, said: 'I felt I was looking into the mirror.'

Lulin added: 'We felt like we had known each other for years and years.'

It emerged both Yanfei and Lulin were adopted as babies and have realised that they must have been twins who were separated at birth.

There are many uncanny similarities between the sisters beyond their physical likeness.
They both got married in 2007, both of their husbands have the same given name, Bin, and their sons also look identical.
They have the same voice, same friendly, out-going personality, share a number of hobbies, a similar style of dressing, and enjoy the same foods.
They even have the same scar on their finger after having similar accidents when they were six.
Baby girls are often given up for adoption in China because of the One Child policy.

Boys are more valued in Chinese society because they carry on the ancestral name and inheritance laws pass property on to sons.
Because of this hundreds of thousands of baby girls are abandoned every year in China. Twins, however, are exempt from the policy.
